Medically reviewed by Danielle Aberman Registered Dietitian (RD). ** This article is written for information purposes only. It is not medical advice or a substitute for medical advice. Consult your doctor for any changes to your migraine care plan.** What is a migraine diet? While there is no one migraine diet, most dietitians, doctors and other health professionals in the know are talking about a low tyramine diet that is also low histamine, MSG (monosodium glutamate) and sulfites. Many years ago, when we started our very popular and peppy private Facebook group, the title of group specifically referred to the Heal Your Headache (HYH) diet by name. We have since…

What No One Tells You about Migraines and Menopause (and Perimenopause Too)

I have always been a headachy person.  Fortunately, migraine didn’t interfere with my life in a debilitating way until my 40s.  Perimenopause was the culprit.  Having gone through perimenopause with migraine does not make me an expert.  It’s one of my areas of interest as a patient and patient advocate.  I have poured over the literature on migraine and migraines as well as watched in-depth interviews of 4 well-recognized experts in this area that were interviewed during the five Migraine World Summit broadcasts.  Their intention was to help during a difficult, undiscussed time and that is my intention, too. My Story I hit the big menopause milestone 6 years ago. …

There.  I said it.  I am a registered dietitian who nearly shudders at the thought of drinking a big glass of water.  Warding-off a dehydration headache and triggering a migraine is often on my mind.  My challenge is getting my good intentions to translate to healthy imbibing on a regular basis.  In social media, it’s not uncommon to see rants like “if one more…

Minimizing Migraine Attacks: What I wish I knew…

There is so much I wish I knew about minimizing migraine when my frequency of attacks was ramping up a few years ago.  I would have avoided chonifying and been so much healthier had this blog site been available to me just a few years ago. I know you don’t feel lucky to ONLY have episodic migraine, but count your lucky stars that you haven’t “chronified.”  Social media, has changed the way people educate and help themselves today. You have so many more resources to help you get better. I assume you have episodic migraine that is worsening and you are here trying to figure out what to do to…

4 Steps To Tackle Migraine Headaches

For as long as I could remember, I considered myself a headachy person.  At some point the headaches progressed to migraine.  Fortunately, for most of my life I had infrequent episodic migraine (EM).  An attack would start, I’d treat it with ibuprofen and I was better in an hour.  I sought treatment when I began losing a few days per month to terrible attacks that didn’t respond to over-the-counter (OTC) remedies.  Over time, my frequency of attacks increased and I “chronified” while under the care of my well-intentioned primary care physicians.  While Migraine Strong writes about the latest in migraine treatments, this is not medical advice. We are patient educators…

What Is The Root Cause of Migraine

Back in my early days of episodic migraine I didn’t give much thought to the root cause of migraine attacks.  It wasn’t until I had chronic migraine (defined as 15 or more days per month with migraine symptoms) that I started to wonder what the heck was causing my once full life to get smaller and smaller.  Once I was satisfied that it was “just” migraine and not a brain tumor or aneurysm ready to blow, I wanted to know what was wrong with my body so I could fix it. What was my root cause of migraine? While Migraine Strong writes about the latest in migraine treatments, this is not…

Migraine Attack Free While Being Stalked by a Hurricane

A turtle named Dorian Staying migraine attack free while fighting off stress and a hurricane is tough. A fellow Floridian posted a funny meme while Florida waited for news about hurricane Dorian. Something to the effect of waiting on hurricanes was like being stalked by a turtle. We all felt like we were being stalked by a turtle that would likely be a very serious threat to life and property in the coming days.  However, this stress is very different than the colossal stress I have had over the past few months.  The stress is real Just to name a few stressful things I have dealt with – we decided…

    The Vicious Cycle of Rebound

What is rebound? And how do you tell the difference between rebound or frequent/chronic migraine?  The more commonly used term in the medical community is medication-overuse headache (MOH).  We call it ‘rebound’ as MOH tends to imply patients are to blame for their pain. Rebound happens when prescribed and/or over-the-counter (OTC) meds used to relieve pain, begin to cause pain or “stop working.” Initially, I didn’t know about rebound. And besides, I couldn’t possibly have rebound from medications prescribed by my doctor. Ha! My triptan (sumatriptan) had worked beautifully for many years…until it didn’t.  Maybe I just needed a bigger dose? Perhaps I could take it with ibuprofen or another NSAID (non steroidal…
