Best Tea for Migraine: Check Out Our Top Picks

    December 10, 2020

OK, I know what you’re thinking…tea for migraine? Insert eye roll right? But hear me out here. I do understand the seriousness of our neurological disease. After spending MANY months housebound due to the ongoing dizziness caused by vestibular migraine, I understand how debilitating it can be as well. So I am not touting tea for migraine as our miracle cure. Tea is not going to magically make your neurological disease go away, but it can help ease some of its symptoms.

Allay Lamp: Green Light Therapy for Vestibular Migraine

    September 3, 2020

When I first saw the Allay Green Light for migraine relief I’m going to admit, I was a bit skeptical. When you see an ad for it scroll across your Facebook newsfeed, it hurts your eyes a little to look at it. Rest assured that green light you see through your computer screen is not the light emitted from the lamp. The Allay light bulb contains no color mingling or color interference like on your computer screen or phone. It’s a pure, flicker-free light that’s gentler than every other light. As I read positive reviews and learned who developed the lamp, it definitely started to spark my interest. I wondered…

5 Effective Steps For Natural Migraine Prevention: S.E.E.D.S.

    August 18, 2020

Even though migraine affects 1 out of 7 Americans annually and is a leading cause of outpatient and emergency department visits, many people still think of migraine as “just a headache.” [1] When people call migraine “a headache,” they minimize migraine and its symptoms. First, migraine is a genetic neurologic disease. Second, migraine has an array of disabling symptoms, with headache as just one of the symptoms. Finally, because migraine is a disease that we live with every day, it needs to be managed daily. This article will focus on natural migraine prevention method, such as S.E.E.D.S., to successfully manage migraine disease............

Allay Lamp – The Green Light For Migraine – Six Month Update

    August 6, 2020

When Allay sent me their green light for migraine to review six months ago, I didn’t think it would become one of my favorite tools in my toolkit. In these past months, I have been successfully using it as a preventive and abortive treatment. When I first wrote about the Allay Lamp, I explained how the narrow band of green light in the lamp worked. It was a novel item I had added to my migraine toolkit. But it has been six months now and my love of the Allay Lamp is still going strong. I thought I would write an update on how the lamp and I have been doing.…

Exercise and Migraines: 5 Head-Friendly Workout Ideas

    May 14, 2020

Exercise induced migraines are a struggle for many of us, yet we are all told to exercise to prevent migraine attacks. It’s a little confusing right? As someone who has lived with vestibular migraine for over 4 years and had 24/7 dizziness along with feeling like I was walking in a bounce house all day, this was an extremely frustrating part of migraine treatment. How on earth can I move when I feel so terrible?  My Personal Journey This was a question I had for a while as I searched for a new exercise plan after I lost my job to migraine. I usually just stayed at home but I…

Managing Stress and Migraine Attacks During COVID-19

    April 10, 2020

What a difficult few weeks it has been. It’s hard enough to manage migraine disease during normal life, but adding in quarantines, worrying about the health of family and friends, and having to disinfect every little thing that comes into our house is just so incredibly difficult. For me, staying at home isn’t much of a change. I work from home and most of my job is already done online or in the kitchen. But even I am getting restless not being able to see my friends and especially my mom and dad. Overall I hadn’t had many challenges adjusting, except for having to cut back massively on my grocery…

The Allay Lamp for Migraine Light Sensitivity

    April 3, 2020

My migraine light sensitivity is rather legendary. Everyone from my family, friends and even this migraine community has heard me talk about or has read what I have written about it. During bad attacks it seems as if the sun is loud and not just exceedingly bright. I love a dark cave of a room during an attack more than anywhere else. It is my safe place.  When I was approached by the Allay company to test the new Lamp for migraine in exchange for my feedback, I was excited to give it a try. This is yet another tool that we can add to our toolbox to fight migraine…

👂 Did you know vestibular migraine is commonly 👂 Did you know vestibular migraine is commonly co-morbid in those with Ménière’s disease? And with Ménière’s disease comes hearing loss. 🤫 I always thought hearing loss would feel like the volume being slowly turned down until sound is gone, but that’s not accurate. Tinnitus (the perception of noise or ringing in the ears) and hyperacusis (when ordinary sounds seem much louder than they should) are common with hearing loss. And there is no off button for the constant noise that sounds like the feedback you hear through speakers when a microphone is too close. ✈️ A friend with Ménière’s disease described it as having a phone conversation, on an airport runway, next to a jet taking off and I agree! 🚁 Anyone else have both vestibular migraine and Ménière’s disease? What’s your experience? Let us know below.

⚡️ Hemiplegic migraine is an under discussed, ⚡️ Hemiplegic migraine is an under discussed, complex migraine variant that mimics a stroke or seizure. It’s very important to receive a diagnosis for HM to receive proper treatment. 🍗 Are you beginning or have you re-committed to 🍗 Are you beginning or have you re-committed to a migraine elimination diet? Here are a few tips we hope help! 🥬 First eliminate all of the common triggers listed on the diet you select. Don’t try to avoid a few random foods you think “could be” a trigger. That’s called an avoidance diet vs an elimination diet & they’re typically not successful. 🌽 Follow your diet for at least four months or until you reach baseline. If you’re experiencing chronic symptoms it can take much longer to reach baseline. Many with chronic vestibular migraine dizziness report needing much longer...around 9 months to one year mark.
🌶 Expect to make some mistakes along the way. Mistakes don’t mean throwing in the towel. Just get back on the horse and go again. 😉 🍔 Do your best to keep healthy perspective. Try not to develop fears around foods on the no list. Eliminating common triggers does NOT mean these foods are dangerous or will be a personal trigger for you. 🫑 Once you reach baseline, you’re ready to start reintroducing foods to test them as personal triggers for you. To do this start with the foods you miss the most. Eat that food everyday for five days. 5 days is important because tolerance of a dietary trigger will vary from day to day depending on the amount of “other” triggers happening such as hormone fluctuations or weather systems rolling through. Time of day may be a factor as well. When I began introducing foods I introduced just one a week and kept a diary to help track responses. 🍅 Another thing to note is the age of the foods you eat. You may be able to tolerate cheeses aged less than three months, but not older cheeses or bananas and avocado with a bit of green, but not once they show browning. 🍷 If you reintroduce alcohol, vodka and white wine seem to be less risky than other choices. 🫐 Most importantly remember an elimination diet is not forever. It’s designed to help you identify whether or not you have any personal food triggers. Migraine triggers tend to rise and fall. We can be REALLY sensitive one day and get away with things another so plan to be flexible and adjust your compliance according to your personal needs. 🍉 Continued in comments...
🍔 Let’s talk about diets that can help migrai 🍔 Let’s talk about diets that can help migraine. ✨ Heal Your Headache & Charleston: 🍐🍑🍗🍞🥦🥚🥩 🍔 We talk about the Heal Your Headache diet a lot. It is a low tyramine and lowish histamine diet. Following this diet can help our brains calm down and let our preventives work better. Many of us have had great success on this diet. We highly recommend it and are happy to help with ideas, tip and tricks for helping anyone who chooses to try it be more successful. Charleston is very similar, but a bit more restrictive. Keto: 🍗🥑🥦🥚🧀🥓🥩 🍔 We also talk about the Ketogenic diet which has become more popular in the last 5-10 years. This diet has many foods available that are avoided on the HYH diet. While this can be confusing, the keto diet uses ketones as fuel instead of glucose, which is what your body uses when your diet has sugar and grains in it. These ketones sort of bathe the brain and quiet it down. These ketones make it so that many of us can eat foods not typically allowed on the HYH diet (avocado, bacon, cheese, sour cream etc.) ✨ 🍔 The new year often inspires many of us to recommit to a diet or to commit for the first time. Have you tried a migraine diet? Which one did you try and how did it work for you? Let us know below. ——————————
